Description
:Heartbreaking photographs show the decline of a Perth mother-of-three as she battled a sudden diagnosis of bowel cancer.Nicole Yarran was expecting her third child when she was diagnosed with the aggressive and often deadly disease, ABC's 7.30 reported. The 32-year-old's frame turned from svelte to skeletal, and her condition deteriorated quickly.Ms Yarran had told doctors over two years about her symptoms, but was brushed off as suffering from irritable bowel syndrome - before doctors found 'eight golf-ball sized tumours' on her liver during a routine pregnancy scan.'She told him the symptoms, that she had bleeding from the bowel,' her mother, Kathy Narrier, told 7.30.'He boiled it down to irritable bowel syndrome and kept giving her medication for that. They wouldn't do the stool test, no colonoscopy or nothing. They just said that she was too young.' Each year, nearly 15,000 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer. While only 7.5per cent of those people are under 50 years of age, the figure is rising rapidly.Bowel cancer rates have doubled in Australians aged 20-29 and grown by 35 per cent for those between 30 and 39 over the past two decades.Little is known about the cause for the rise in young people developing the deadly disease, but specialists believe a diet of processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle could be to blame.Terry Slevin from Cancer Council WA says screening - which is free for over-50s - has proven to be effective in catching the disease in its early stages, but the uptake rate was not high enough.'I think there's a fundamental driver here that is a real concern - and that is embarrassment,' he said, adding people were still turned off by the idea of discussing their bowel functions.'It's crazy. There are genuinely people dying of embarrassment.' Ms Narrier told 7.30 her daughter's last wish was for her to spread the word that young people could develop the disease.'If you know your body and you know something's wrong, don't take their word.Continually ask them to do something about it,' she said.
